Different Varieties of Golf Clubs: Knowing Your Equipment

Golf clubs are the single most important tool or piece of equipment a golf player can possess. Used to strike the ball, golf clubs have two major parts. One is the clubhead which is the part that is used for making contact with the golf ball and hitting it.

The other part is the shaft of the club which is the long stalk connected to the clubhead. The shaft is outfitted with the lance which is the portion that the player uses to grip the club while swinging. There are different kinds of golf clubs and each is used for serving a specific purpose throughout the course of an entire game.

Namely, the golf clubs can be divided into three categories: the putters, the irons and the woods. A fourth category, known as the ‘hybrids’ also exist. The putters serve the purpose of nudging the ball into falling into the cup on the golf greens. The irons are extremely useful as they can be used for a variety of purposes and shots in the game.

The woods are primarily used for implementing fairway shots at extended distances.  The difference between each category of clubs is determined by the degree of the loft. The loft can be understood to be the angle at which the surface of the club head is aligned with reference to the shaft of the golf club.

The loft is crucial in determining the power of the swing because it is the factor influencing the trajectory of the golf ball once it has been hit by the club. Most people form the misconception that it is the force of the swing and the angle at which the club makes contact with the ball that determines the upward movement and speed of the golf ball.

This is not correct as it is actually the magnitude of the loft that determines the particulars of the path that the golf ball takes from the tee after it has been hit by the club.

In the putter clubs, the loft between the clubhead and the shaft is kept under a magnitude of ten degrees so that the push is just enough to move the ball gently from the grass into the cup. While a minimal loft helps the ball to roll further, it also reduces the chances of the golf ball bouncing on the greens.
